Situation

A prominent cable distributor needed to transport large, industrial cable reels from Pusan, South Korea, to Nawiliwili, Hawaii. These reels were critical for a time-sensitive infrastructure project in Eleele, Hawaii. This shipment posed several challenges:

1. Non-Palletized Cargo: The reels were not palletized making it difficult to find final-mile truckers willing to handle the delivery (Drayage + transload + final mile delivery on flatbed)

2. Port Complexity: Nawiliwili is a smaller, intricate port with limited capacity for oversized freight, requiring meticulous planning.

3. Ocean Booking Challenges: Most major carriers did not offer a direct service from Busan to Nawiliwili. Initially, we explored routing the shipment from Los Angeles to Honolulu and using a barge option to Nawiliwili. However, this posed additional costs and delays. After reaching out to multiple carriers and engaging in discussions with our management team, we identified Matson as a reliable provider offering direct service from Busan to Nawiliwili.

4. Sensitive Cargo: The reels required specialized handling, with strict protocols ensuring no direct contact with the wire itself during unloading, handling, or loading. Any contact could risk damaging the wire and compromise the entire reel.

Task

1. Secure a reliable ocean carrier to ship the reels directly to Nawiliwili, avoiding unnecessary delays and transshipment.

2. Handle the reels with utmost care, ensuring no damage during transit, unloading, or delivery as any contact could risk damage to the wire and if any part of the wire gets damaged the whole wire gets affected/ruined.

3. Find a final-mile trucking partner who could handle the non-palletized cargo and deliver the reels safely to the final destination in Hawaii.

4. Streamline the process to ensure timely delivery for the client’s critical infrastructure project.

Action

1. Ocean Carrier Coordination: After exploring multiple routing options, including shipping via Los Angeles and Honolulu, we identified Matson, a carrier offering direct service from Busan to Nawiliwili. This eliminated the need for additional transloading at multiple ports and ensured the shipment’s integrity.

  • Conducted extensive discussions with management and reached out to nearly all ocean carriers operating in the region to finalize the booking. o Secured a reliable direct service with Matson, optimizing both time and cost.

2. Sensitive Handling Protocols

  • Established clear handling guidelines to ensure no direct contact with the wire during unloading, handling, and reloading.

  • Implemented Inbound and Outbound Inspection Reports at every key step:

    • Inbound Inspection Report: Completed during unloading at the transloading facility to verify reel condition. 

    • Outbound Inspection Report: Completed during flatbed loading to ensure reels were damage-free before final-mile delivery.

3. Final-Mile Delivery Partnership:

  • Faced initial refusals from trucking companies unwilling to handle non-palletized cargo.

  • After regular discussions and alignment, partnered with a reliable trucking provider in Nawiliwili who specialized in handling delicate, oversized reels.

  • Arranged drayage, transloading at a warehouse, and secured flatbed trucks for delivery to Hawaii

4. Real-Time Coordination:

  • Proactively monitored the shipment’s progress from Busan to Nawiliwili, ensuring clear communication with all stakeholders.

  • Worked closely with the final-mile trucking team to ensure smooth delivery and adherence to safety protocols.

RESULT

1. Efficient Direct Shipment: By securing Matson’s direct service, we avoided costly and time-consuming transshipment via Los Angeles and Honolulu.

2. On-Time Delivery: The reels were successfully delivered to Hawaii, within the client’s required timeframe.

3. Zero Damage: Strict handling protocols ensured the reels arrived in perfect condition, with no damage to the sensitive wires as we also maintained the Inbound and outbound report to verify reel condition and instructed our partners overseas how to handle the reels.

4. Reliable Partnerships: Established a long-term partnership with a trusted trucking provider in Nawiliwili, capable of handling future non-palletized shipments.
